Welcome to the largest annual space & science hackathon in the world.

Updated: Jan 22, 2023

Join them on October 1-2 as thousands of people across the world come together for Space Apps 2022!

Last year, Space Apps welcomed over 28,000 registrants, across 162 countries and territories. Using open data from NASA and our 9 partner space agencies, they tackled 28 challenges and produced 2,814 projects.

NASA Space Apps Challenge welcomes participants from all around the world regardless of background and experience to come together, think intensely, and create solutions to important problems using NASA’s open-source data.Students, teenagers, working adults, and anyone above 13 years old are most welcomed to develop their innovative solutions in this challenge

Space Apps Challenge is a 48 hours global hackathon event organised by NASA to inspire local communities to come together, think intensely, and create solutions to important problems. Every year thousands of individuals in cities around the world will work with NASA’s open source data to answer some of the most pressing challenges on Earth and in space. These individuals can be from a diverse background such as technologists, scientists, designers, entrepreneurs, artists and others.Register now for event

Challenges:

  • TWINKLE, TWINKLE, LITTLE STAR

Your challenge is to develop a tool to help people learn about stellar variability—how and why the stars in the night sky change. Think about the best way to communicate this knowledge to your audience. Perhaps you’ll create a game or visualizer that allows people to see star variations using data from NASA missions, or a curriculum that uses existing data and educational resources to teach students about stellar variability. Don’t forget the most effective learning tools provide an enjoyable and educational experience for players/students!

  • HOW DOES CLIMATE CHANGE AFFECT YOU?

Your challenge is to make a brief video (3 minutes or less) that communicates scientific truth and your experience of some aspect of climate change. The goal of your video is to provide scientifically correct information about climate change in a creative manner. We recommend focusing on an aspect of climate change that impacts you personally, explaining the phenomenon, and explaining why it matters to you. Your video should be factual, scientific, and educational, but should not advocate political positions or political or social calls to action.

  • EXPLORING VENUS TOGETHER

Your challenge is to design an energy storage system that supports a surface lander or rover on the surface of Venus for at least 60 days. How would you power your mission? Would you use a chemical battery, or a spring, or a flywheel energy storage system… or something else creatively invented by YOU!? Perhaps the resources available in the atmosphere or on the surface of Venus could be utilized. Whatever system you develop, remember to specify the volume and mass of your system and the amount of energy it will store and deliver. Also, don’t forget to specify the rate at which energy is lost when your system is not in use.

  • CREATIVE DATA DISPLAY WITH THE PARKER SOLAR PROBE

Your challenge is to develop interactive and creative ways to improve public knowledge about the many spacecraft currently exploring the Sun, and help nonscientists interpret data from these missions using creative, user-friendly, and inviting methods. Think about how you can make this information accessible to the public so people around the world can see, hear, or feel how important it is. Let your creativity take you into the future!

RECOGNITION, JUDGING, AND AWARDS

Will participants get certificates?

Regardless of whether your team wins an award, participants who are on a registered team and submit a project by the end of the hackathon (October 2, 11:59 PM, local time) will receive a certificate recognizing their participation.

What will be the award for Space Apps 2022 winners?

Once travel is deemed safe, winning teams will receive an invitation to the Winners Trip, which could potentially include viewing a spacecraft launch at a NASA facility.

Each winning team member will be allowed to invite a guest of their choice. The Local Lead associated with each winning team, and a guest of their choice, will also receive an invitation. All invited guests will be responsible for arranging and financing their own travel, visas, meals, incidental expenses, and accommodation.

Please also note that winners’ and guests’ invitations and access to NASA facilities are subject to NASA security and United States regulatory screening and clearance.

The details of the Winners’ Trip are subject to change based on the evolving dynamics of the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, since there are many factors, including weather, that determine the successful launch of a rocket on schedule, NASA cannot guarantee that travelers will actually see a launch.
